A user has portrait pages with a header. When she inserted
a landscape page and adjusted the header for this page, it
changed for all of the portrait pages too. We tried
inserting a section break for the landscape page and set
the header to be the wider style from that point forward
but it still changed on the previous portrait pages. Any
ideas how to get around this? I contemplated advising her
to create the landscape pages in a different document but
that will cause a problem with pages numbering.

You have to unlink the headers. Full explanation at:

See "what happens when you have more than one section"
