View Full Version : Protecting Styles while pasting text

I have created a template for Word 2003 and protected the styles. But how
can I prevent from new styles coming if users paste text from other
documents with different styles, and most important, how can I protect the
"Normal" style from being overwritten when pasting text from another
document with a diferent "Normal" style.

See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/FormatOfTextChanges.html for an
explanation of what to expect. Normal text pasted from another document
should take on the Normal style of the document into which it is pasted.
Direct formatting will be preserved but can be removed by resetting the
paragraph/font formatting.

I found out that I needed to disable "Intelligent Cut and Past" from the
EDIT tab in the OPTIONS dialog box. Now when I paste text into the document
A it retains the style definition of document A. If you do not do this, when
you paste text from another document which has the same style names but
different definition, it modifies the style definition in document A with
that being pasted.

I would imagine you could just fine-tune the Smart Cut and Paste settings
(I'd guess "Smart style behavior" would be the culprit) rather than disable
the feature altogether.
The context-sensitive help in Word 2002 (unfortunately omitted from Word
2003) describes the "Smart style behavior" setting as follows:
Specifies that style conflicts will be handled consistently when the style
in the document you are pasting from has the same name as a style in the
document to which you are pasting. By using the Paste Options button, you
can determine whether text will keep its original formatting or be formatted
the same as text in the destination document.
For further explanation of these settings, see WD2002: General Information
About Smart Cut and Paste Settings” at
