Back to where i was

I am adding endnotes to a long 500+ pages document. Each time I add the note
the cursor jumps to the end of the document, is there any 'back to where I
was' option to take me back to where I was?

SHIFT+F5 will take you back to the last edit.

And a double-click on the endnote reference in the endnote will take you
back to the reference in the text.

In old versions (I think up to Word2000) the same keyboard shortcut that
inserted an endnote (Alt+Ctrl+D) also took you back to the text.
But that got broken.

Alternatively, if you work in Normal View, the endnotes will appear in a
pane at the bottom of the screen and you will be able to see both the
sentence you are endnoting and the endnote you are adding at the same time.
With a 500-page doc, you might also notice that Word is faster in Normal
View.

The normal view trick is a blessing, i never thought of using it before.
