After a lot of searching and thinking, this is what I managed to do. There is

How did you "restore" your PST file? You did so incorrectly. Instead you
created a second PST file.
There is only one correct way to "restore" a PST file: Open it in Outlook
and set it to be your default.
Why don't you just combine your Contacts into the default PST file, then
close the PST file that is not your default?

I had to retore my Outlook 2003 pst files from a backup copy on a separate
drive. I now have 2 folders both called Contacts. The one it saves
received
e-mail addresses to is not the one it uses to look up an address when I
write
a new mail - though I can get to it. How can I get back to one common
Contacts folder?
