Suzanne, is there a work-around? It all worked fine in Word 97, and in Word 2000, but now that I have 2003 - problems! It does seem to work if I make my drawing object outside the table, then cut/copy and paste them - sometimes pasting several times, after which they all appear at once - and then move one to where I want it and delete the others. It sure is annoying to have to do it that way, but I am not inclined to go back over several 200+-page manuals and undo all the tables, so I guess I will just have to live with it. The other thing I have been doing is incorporating arrows, circles, etc. into the graphics themselves as much as possible.

Interesting that you used the word "layer." I will search for more in the Knowledge Base and also use that word when looking in the Help files.
