Sorry, this isn't going to solve all your problems. If you set the
default text in the Properties dialog, then clicking won't select the
whole field (but double-clicking it will). If you don't set the
default text, then the field won't be wider.

I have to ask, though: In the copies of Word 2000 and Word 2003 that I
have here, a newly inserted text form field is five spaces wide, or
almost 0.5 inch. Is that what you see? If so, why is that so hard to
hit with a mouse click?

open the Properties dialog. Type the nonbreaking spaces
(Ctrl+Shift+spacebar) into the Default Text box in the dialog.

The bookmark really doesn't have anything to do with the way the form
field displays or operates. It serves more as a name for the field
when you want to manipulate it in a macro.

then add spaces inside of the bookmark the bookmark expands. When I then
click the protect document button the bookmark snaps back to is small
