Default Disable INSERT Key in Word XP

Hi -- I keep hitting the INSERT key on my laptop. Rats! I need to
disable it in Word XP so that I don't turn on the overtype mode. How
can I go about that?

There are two ways with different effects.

One is to go to Tools Options Edit and check the box for "Use the INS
key for paste". After that, the Insert key will paste whatever is on the
clipboard, if anything. Personally, I would find this just as annoying as
accidentally turning on the overtype mode.

The other way makes the Insert key have no function at all. Go to Tools
Customize Keyboard. Make sure the "Save changes in" dropdown is set to
Normal.dot. In the Categories list, click All Commands. In the Commands
list, click Overtype. In the Current Keys box, select the word Insert, and
click the Remove button, followed by the Close button. When you exit Word,
be sure to save changes to Normal.dot.

After all this, if you ever do want overtype mode for any reason, you can
toggle it by double-clicking the letters OVR in the status bar.
