Default Office 2007 - Vista - Cannot Save to network drive

I would like to share my experiences on this issue in the hope that they may
help to find a solution. I have been experiencing exactly the same problem to
the extent that it has made working in Office 2007 (on Vista, in my case,
with the shared folders on SBS2003) practically impossible at times and a
huge disapointment after upgrading.

1. The messages I receive are generally "Document not saved" (in Excel 2007)
and "There has been a network or file permission error. The network
connection may be lost" (in Word 2007).

2. I am only using Word and Excel 2003 formats, not .docx and .xlsx.

3. Problem occurs with a shared network drive on SBS2003 - user has full
control of this folder and sub-folders in security settings.

4. Disabled antivirus (Symantec Corporate) on workstation and server - no
effect.

5. Ran Word in safe mode to disable Adobe PDF add-ins - no effect.

6. Disabled offline files - no effect.

7. Whenever the error occurs, a .tmp file is created. Sometimes, by renaming
the .tmp file to .doc, it can be successfully opened in Word or Excel, but
not always.

8. At all times the error occurs, I can save the same document in the same
format on the desktop (or any local location) and then copy and paste it into
the same network location that causes an error in Word or Excel.

9. This problem is not consistent. Sometimes, I can work without a problem
and at other times I cannot save any document that has been changed.

I hope that this helps and I look forward to more troubleshooting next week
after Ian's input.

| Hi Emily,
|
| We have removed Antivirus as a temporary test but the result was the
same...
| so it wasn't the AV.
|
| I don't have access to the machine, user is out of the office. I've
asked
| them to perform the tasks you want and I'll let you know the results. I
| think I get time with the machine at the weekend, so will check then.
|
| As far as I know we are trying to save .doc files in word and it says
| "unable to save file - document not saved". or words to that effect.
|
| Regards
|

| Hi Ian,
|
| Thank you for posting here!
|
| My name is Emily and I am happy to be working with you on this issue.
From
| the problem description of the post you submitted, my understanding is:
| - You are unable to save Office 2007 documents to a shared folder.
| If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.
|
| Recently, we receive the similar issues. The issue may occur under
several
| situations. The most common causes a
| 1. The Temporarily Internet Files location.
| 2. Antivirus/firewall programs affects the saving process.
| 3. The add-ins (such as PDF Maker addin, SnagIn addin) in Office 2007
| affects the saving process.
| 4. Other causes.
| Let's perform the following steps to narrow down this issue and resolve
the
| issue. Your patience and cooperation will be appreciated.
|
| Collect information to narrow the issue:
| 1. What is the exact error message when you try to save files to the
| network drive in Office 2007, "document not saved", "file cannot be
found",
| or others?
| 2. In Word 2007, try to save a *.doc (not *.docx) to the network drive.
| What is the result?
| 3. Does the issue also occur when you try to save another shared folder
on
| another computer/server, or it only occurs when saving to shared
folders on
| a specific server?
| 4. Run winword /a to come into Word safe mode. Try to save to a file to
the
| network drive again. What is the result?
| 5. Come into Windows safe mode with network. Open Word 2007 and save a
file
| to the network drive. What is the result?
| 6. Run Procmon.exe to get the process monitor log file.
| - Download procmon.exe
|
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...ssmonitor.mspx
| - Run procmon.exe
| - Stop the current logging by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
| - Clear the current log by clicking on the eraser button.
| - Start the capturing by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
| - Reproduce the issue via one of the repro processes that you have
noted
| the symptoms from.
| - Stop the capturing by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
| - Click the File menu Save to save the file as Issue.pml.
| - Zip up and send the resulting log files to me at
.
|
| Suggestion:
|
| #1
| Update all the programs on the computer (Microsoft related programs,
| Anti-virus program, Adobe program if you installed it, and etc.)
|
| #2 Temporarily Internet Files
| When you work in a file, Microsoft Office saves the file with a
temporary
| file name and places this file in the same folder as the original file.
|
| Additional, Office 2007 uses Open XML formats and need to modify
temporary
| files located in whatever folder that is defined for the Temporary
Internet
| File location in Internet Explorer. Did you change the default
Temporary
| Internet File location in IE. If there is problem with the Temporary
| internet Files, such an issue may also occur. Please check it.
| ----------------------------
| 1. In IE, click the Tools menu Internet Options in the General tab,
| click Settings under 'temporary internet files' click 'View Files'
are
| the 'temporary internet files' saved under the system drive
(C:\Documents
| and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files)?
|
| If not, click Move Folder to move it to the C: drive. Click OK.
|
| 2. In the Internet Options dialog box, Delete Files, Delete Cookies to
| empty the Temporary Internet Files. Click OK.
|
| Test the issue again. What is the result?
|
| #3 disable offline files
| =============
| For Windows Vista:
|
| --Click Start
| --Type 'offline files' in the Search dialog on the start menu
| --Click the button "Disable Offline Files"
|
| Test the issue again. If it doesn't work, go to next step.
|
| If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't
| hesitate to contact me.
|
| Sincerely,
|

| | Hi,
| |
| | I raised this problem in the vista news-threat but it would seem
its
| related
| | to office 2007.
| |
| | Runniing windows Vista Buseiness, on a domain, with sbs2003
server.
| Cannot
| | save documents to a network shared drive (mapped) only can drag
and
| drop them
| | once saved to the desktop.
| |
| | If one attempts to save to the network drive recieve an error
message
| saying
| | that the network connection has been lost. The file gets created
but
| is
| | empty - data cannot be written. The error messages in word and
excel
| are
| | slightly different but the result is the same. Word says that
file
| data
| | could not be written.
| |
| | Has anyone had any issues like this?
| |
| | Thanks
| |
