Are you talking about a text form field or the kind of text box you insert
from the Drawing toolbar (or Insert menu)? If you're just wanting to create
a check box, there are plenty of other ways to do it. My favorite way is
with an EQ \x field (using several nonbreak spaces).

Thanks for the reply.
I am placing a text box in forms that is an option for students to either
check or leave blank on a printed form.
As I explained in my original message, the copy machine that I have at
work will not print a box when using the Control Text Box object, so I have
to use a text box to simulate the check box.
I saw a message from you, on Google, in a reply to a similar situation
(this was from about 2 years ago) that suggested turning off word wrap in
the text box properties, but this does not work in Word 2002?
Any help you can give would be appreciated.

I am trying to place a drawn text box inside a table cell and it
does all
kinds of strange things.
This is Word 2002 SP3 running on XP Pro SP1.
I have a table with 4 columns and 6 rows. Text is entered in the
cells. I
try to place a text box in a cell and first, the text in that cell
jumps to
the top of the cell?. I try and copy/paste the text box and move it
to
another cell and as soon as it crosses a cell border, it disappears?
I cannot use the Control object text box because the printercopy
machine,
I am using at work, prints these as a question mark.
I have tried just about every combination of settings available in
the
Format Text Box dialog. If I turn off Word Wrap, the text box, which
is
square, turns into a rectangular box?
Any ideas?
TIA
Joe
