Default Too many hyperlinks?

Hi,

Thanks so much for taking a look at the report. Looking=20
at the whole thing, I find quite a few black squares; I'm=20
sure it will be helpful to know that means to redo the=20
link. The space marks in the other link appear to be part=20
of the original URL (again, it's an intranet so...)

I have a feeling that I'm somehow corrupting the links by=20
the way I am inserting them, but I've followed the Help=20
instructions in ppt. Do you know of any tutorial=20
available that walks through hyperlinking in ppt?

Thanks for all your help.

Thanks for your notes. I've copied a portion of the=20
report below, but I notice that the report doesn't give=20
the status of any of the links. Hummmm.

It only checks link status for links to external files,=20

so that's not a big=20
issue. I'll chop out the ones that look normal to me and=20

comment on the=20
questionable ones:

Slide ShapeName Status Link

See the square there after "Strategy"?
That's almost a sure sign of a corrupted link and might=20

be the root of your=20
problem. When PPT stumbles across one of those, it tends=20

to ignore the rest of=20
the links on the page. =20

Try deleting that whole string of text, including any=20

paragraph ends at=20
beginning and front, then re-enter the text and re-apply=20

the link. =20
Specifically don't copy/paste the text back in. That'll=20

just paste the problem=20
back in too. ;-)

When you first saw this in notepad, did the URL have=20

linebreaks (or did it have=20
any empty squares in it)? In other words, did Notepad=20

add the linebreaks? =20
What if you turn off wordwrap in Notepad? Does the=20

entire link stay as one=20
long line? It'd need to in order to work. =20

It may also be that PPT doesn't recognize all the unusual=20

characters
I tried it here and it worked up to a point (I got a=20

message from MSIE saying=20
it couldn't locate the proxy server) but I think that may=20

just be because it's=20
on a private intranet, no?

The next several are probably bunged as well and should=20

probably be recreated. =20

Several have no link target (ie, the "xxx,y,Slide Text"=20

bit at the end if the=20
first line):

=20

It should look like this:

On this and several of the others, I'm a bit suspicious=20

of the linebreaks, but=20
let's leave those aside for now

Sorry; I don't know how to send you the report=20

The report comes up in Notepad. Press Ctrl+A to=20

select=20
it all, press Ctrl+C to=20
copy it, then switch to a reply to the newsgroup and=20

press Ctrl+V to paste in=20
the report. If there's anything in there you don't=20

want=20
the world to see, I'd=20
edit it out in Notepad first.

but it says=20
I only have 4062 bytes so I guess size isn't the=20

problem. =20

Nowhere close. It seems you're safe on that score.

Any other ideas? Do I need to hyperlink in any=20

certain=20
order, or finish the presentation first and then do=20

all=20
the links?

No, there shouldn't be any need for that, but=20

sometimes=20
links can get corrupted=20
when they're edited; I may be able to tell from the=20

report, so go ahead and=20
pop that in if you would.

Also, when you look at the report, does it appear to=20

include all the links that=20
you know are in the presentation? =20

I attempted to develop a ppt. presentation in the=20

2000=20
version that hyperlinked to other slides in it=20

and=20
also=20
to=20
intranet pages. At 16 slides, 15 internal links=20

and=20
44=20
hperlinks to intranet pages, links either don't=20

work=20
or=20
go=20
to an incorrect link. I then read at the MS site=20

that=20
hyperlink storage cannot exceed 32 KB, if that. =20

So=20
I=20
started over, with 1 slide per presentation,=20

keeping=20
them=20
in the same folder. This could mean several=20

hundred=20
separate presentations. I assume relinking them=20

to=20
a=20
folder that can be accessed via the intranet will=20

mean=20
manual relinking, yes? Any advice for another=20

way=20
to=20
accomplish my goal of many links that's less=20

clunky?

Normally with the number of links you've described,=20

you=20
wouldn't be anywhere=20
near 32k, much less exceeding it. Unless you mean=20

15=20
internal and 44 external=20
links *per slide*.=20

For starters, download the free PPTools FixLinks=20

Demo=20
at=20
http://get.pptools.com
The demo version includes a report tool that'll=20

give=20
you=20
a pretty thorough=20
listing of all the links in your presentation AND a=20

rough=20
count of how much=20
storage the links take up.

Post the report back here if you like, and we can=20

have=20
a=20
look.
