This is usually caused by a Style being created that isn't based on an
existing Style. Click your cursor in a paragraph of a known culprit, click
"Format", "Styles and Formatting" (might be Styles in an older version),
modify that Style by changing the "Language" used (probably set to "No
Language" right now). Depending on the version of Word you are using, there
might be a "Do not check spelling and grammar" checkbox that you need to
uncheck.

Which by the way is a great reminder to ALWAYS provide the version of Word
you are using since the steps might vary slightly by versions.
