Default ie6 sp1 update fails->"wfp: unrecognized version"

From your headers: "Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1409"

I posted from a win2k machine that has no problem so you can't go by that.

Looking at the winxp "bad" system, 6.00.2800.1123 is from the OE "about" on
the computer that has the problem. However, in the same "about" box, there
is a pulldown that shows 1409 for the version of inetcomm.dll I also see
1409 for wab32.dll but generally the dll's have scattered version, not all
the same, some are smaller than 1123. Would it do any good to delete the
history and force XP to download gatesware updates all over again? I have
plenty of time and assume gates wont miss any connect time either. Where
can I get rid of all the downloads and try again. This problem showed up
during that worm that went around two months ago. I got a note from our
network manager *NOT* to download some fix from microsoft, but it was too
late. I never got the worm but some others did.

Back at that update window you mentioned, I looked for 8370009 and it was
not listed, nor was it listed in the win2k system I posted from. However, I
did see one strange item: csapi3t1.dll was "unknown" for revision# in the
XP, and was 1.0.2415 in the
win2k system.

Also, I once put in the XP cdrom that the popup wanted just to see if
loading the original XP would clear things up. I did load something from
the CDROM, but upon reboot, it again attempted to download that SP1 and got
the same unrecognized file. Maye the original download got corrupted and
subsequent downloads dont really bother to download. ie: pick up from where
the last one left off which means nothing really gets downloaded. Where can
I find that sp to delete it and start a real download again?

...thanks..

Q837009 is already installed, BB. (Look for it listed in IE
HelpAboutUpdate versions.)

It's best to disable your anti-virus application and close all running
programs before installing anything (including Windows updates).

Consistently the "Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6

Service
Pack 1" (KB837009) fails installation giving that "windows file
protection - unrecognized version" warning. Clicking on cancel
supposidly warns that the "good" version is about to be replaced with

the
"crummy" one that was just downloaded. Doesnt make any difference what

I
click on, the next time the update runs it spots that ie6-sp1 security
update and attempts to download it again. How do I get out of this

cycle
I have got stuck in? Linux is not an option and I got the latest
"enterprise 7.1" mcafee with updates from this week. I have 4 other
computers at this location, none of them have this problem. However,
this is the only XP one, the rest are win2k. I disabled the autoupdate
feature as I got tired of haveing to see this pop up daily. Now it only
pops up if I explicitely run the "windows update" panel.
