as though there was a problem with the outline numbering in the body of the
document. I re-formatted the numbering in all my headings and created a new
TOC and that seems to have done the trick.

If I access the tab settings through Format/Style/TOC2/Modify, the

dialogue box doesn't recognise the existence of the rogue tab. But it

listed if I access tabs through Format/Tabs, so I can delete it that

way -
or I can apply the format painter.
