Default How to save a Global Template?

Hi Doug,

I guess spending hours on this paid off as I actually understand what you
are talking about! And it confirmed that I was doing the right things...I
was very confused getting there.

After having the weekend to digest it all and reading your reply I wrote a
long reply listing my actions step by step and then I realized what I should
check out. Voila! It worked!

(I always search for others' posts to solve my problems before I post
myself, so I'll detail what troubleshooting I did to help others who might do
the same: After I confirmed from reading DR's reply that I had done the
right things, I thought there must be something wrong with the file I saved
so I opened the .dot file using Explore and checked under View Toolbars to
see if the Checkbox Toggle option was available. It wasn't so I went to my
original unzipped download and opened it again. The author's name was the
original author's (CKK), however *somehow* when I saved it the first time, it
had changed the author's name to mine. I guess this should have been my
first clue, but I didn't think anything of it (as I was trying to read (get
thru) the document and the reference doc on templates). I then deleted the
CheckboxTemplate.dot file in Word Startup and did it again and when I open a
new document now, it works!).

Thx a mint for your help Doug!! (And to Charles Kyle Kenyon for providing
the solution!)

If you have saved the template to the Word Startup Directory, (Usually
c:\Documents and Settings\[username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup,
then after you start Word, when you select Toolbars from the View menu, you
should see a Checkbox Toggles item on the list. If you check that item. the
Checkbox Toggles toolbar should be displayed .

If it is not, take a look under ToolsTemplates and Add-Ins and make sure
that it appears in the list and that it has a checkmark against it.

What exact steps are needed to save a Global Template?

I have read the Checkbox Template Notes document and the one on templates
at
the addbalance.com website (both very informative). However, I am still
unclear on the exact steps to achieve this.

I saved it as CheckboxTemplate.dot into my User Templates folder and then
used Templates & Add-ins Add and it looked like it added it to a global
template (it was listed with a check mark in the box like the Adobe ones
listed). But when I try to add the Check Marks it did not show the
option.

Then I tried another approach. Through Tools Options, I found the
location of the Startup for Word, and copied the CheckboxTemplate.dot to
that
folder. Closed Word, opened it up, and when I went to View Toolbars the
CheckBox Toggle toolbar was not listed.

Help pls. All I want to be able to do is add check-able boxes to my fax
cover page(without creating a whole form)! Working on a stand-alone
WP2000
on XP.

TIA!
