See "Invalid Product Key Error Message When You Install Office 2000" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=820940

Do you by chance have both Office and Works Suite on your system? If Office
is installed after Works Suite, the version of Word installed by Works Suite
is not overwritten by the Office install.
