Default Why have I got two sets of contacts?

I have my contacts in Outlook -which works fine.

BUT I have more contacts in a separate directory called 'contacts' but which
I do not seem to be able to access from Outlook.

Why do I need two sets and is there no way I can access the 'cards' in my
'contacts' directory from within Outlook?

In your "view" of contacts you can choose to view the contacts in different
formats, i.e., detailed, business card, phone. Where have you found this
other list? I'm not sure what you are referring to.

You failed to define your view. You failed to state your Outlook version.
Your question cannot be answered until you ask it clearly.

Are you using Vista? Vista has it's own built-in contacts function which, as
you rightly point out, cannot be accessed from Outlook. Just ignore it...
