Fax from Contact List Area Code Problem

I have Outlook 2000 on Windows 2000. We recently had an area code change, I
was able to reset the default area code, (from 616 to 269). It seems now
that most times when I fax, the fax program wants to stick a +1 at the front
of the number resulting in an incomplete call as an auto operator comes in
and says that I do not have to dial the one as we are in that area code.
When I re-enter the fax number without the area code, I cannot stop the
program from inserting the area code (269) resulting in the insertion of the
+1 when dialling, (I think??). Any help would be appreciated.

You failed to specify your fax software.
Microsoft Fax products all require your phone numbers to be in international
format for dialing rules to be invoked.

It is the fax software that came with Win 2K.

Thank you Russ, perhaps I was not clear enough in my initial explanation.
It happens a lot with me.
I use the outlook contacts address book as my address book in the window
where an address is inserted in the fax. I get into trouble when a fax is
sent locally, i.e.., in my area code (269). What happens is that the fax is
then dialled as 1-269-381-7800. I get an operator on telling me that I do
not need to dial the one as the number is in my area code. What I want to
achieve is the dialler dialling 381-7800 to send a fax.
When I go to the contact and re-enter the number 381-7800, what happens is
that the 269 is automatically inserted and I cannot get rid of it to fax.
It disappears when dialled as a phone call and in fact when I right click
and check what is to dialled it shows me 381-7800. I really would
appreciate more input as it is a bewilderment to me. I hope I have
explained it a liitle better.

I understood the problem. The article provides the solution.
You must have the country code before the phone number in Outlook and must
have and your dialing rules configured correctly.
