If it didn't work, it will be obvious when you reopen Word. Sure enough, didn't work. Thought it was. Open to other ideas and about ready to surrender to the lack of support for Word. Sarah So then there are a couple questions to ask yourself, "Did you load a 3rd party application that is breaking Word?", Adobe acrobat? Avery wizard? and "Have you actually tried to get support for Word anyplace else?" This is only a peer-to-peer user group, we are all Office users just like you. There are Word specific groups and even paid support if you were so inclined. Yes, I am using Acrobat 8 (their creative suite). Thanks, I know about the paid support. I thought this group was the place to ask about Word, could you direct me to another better place? So, Acrobat causes this behavior in Word 2003? Thanks, Sarah |

What's happening is that Adobe is loading IT'S version of your toolbar. Why the "Save All" routine didn't succeed in forcing an overwrite I couldn't say. Perhaps remove Adobe, make your toolbar changes and then install Adobe so it reads the desired arrangement for it's template. |

Word does not remember my toolbar settings
Yes. The Adobe add-in is known to prevent changes to your Normal template
(which is where your toolbar customizations are stored by default) from being saved when you exit Word. I mentioned back on January 6th in this thread. At this point you have a few options: respond to my reply, which provided you with steps you can take to disable the add-in and let me know if you understood it, if it worked, etc, you can obtain paid support, or you could take your question to another newsgroup. However, if you elect to take either of the last two options you'll be told exactly what I told you over a month ago -- that the Adobe add-in is causing the issue you are encountering. Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for assistance by email cannot be acknowledged. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Beth Melton "Sarah" wrote in message ... So, Acrobat causes this behavior in Word 2003? Thanks, Sarah Right. Thanks for your help. At the time I first posted this, which actually may have been a different thread, I was told or given instructions on how to remove the Adobe plug in. I did that and the Adobe toolbar went away. I don't remember if that cured my inability to have word remember my toolbar settings or not. Since then I installed Adobe 8, and the problems are still there (both of them). I know I can uninstall the plugin, but specifically, will this simply get rid of the Adobe toolbar, or will it also let Word remember my toolbar settings? Thanks sincerely for your help, maybe we can get this worked out. I'll try again to remove the plug in. Do you know with any certainty that this will not cause any problem with Adobe Creative Suite? I paid a lot of money to get this very elaborate software suite and don't want to break it just to solve this problem in Word. Thanks, Sarah |

Word does not remember my toolbar settings
A little background on this, as an attempt to work around another issue
their add-in causes Adobe opted to code their add-in so all changes to your Normal template are discarded when you exit Word. While I'm impressed with their ability to create PDF files, I've remained unimpressed with their ability to integrate their product in the Office applications. What you are encountering is only one of the issues they have created with their add-in and each version of the add-in seems to bring a new set of issues with it. Removing the Word add-in will not cause problems with the Adobe Creative Suite but it will remove the Adobe toolbar in Word. Even if the toolbar isn't present you can still use the Print dialog box and select the Adobe printer for PDFs. If you want to keep the toolbar then, as Bob previously noted, hold Shift, click File and then click Save All to force Word to save your changes that the Adobe add-in is discarding. But you noted that didn't work. So, you can try making a couple changes, then press Alt+F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor, and then click the Save button there. Once finished you can close the Visual Basic Editor. Note you will need to do this each time you make a change to your toolbars or make modifications to Word that are saved in your Normal template. I've also heard Adobe has an update on their site for this issue so you may want to check there. If they do have an update then you won't need to go through all of this just to save your personal preferences. Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for assistance by email cannot be acknowledged. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Beth Melton Right. Thanks for your help. I will try checking for an Adobe fix, saving in the VB editor, and finally removing the Adobe plug in. I have an unrelated question I was going to post, but I have to be honest, it seems like you are single handedly fielding all the questions for help here. It makes me a little uncomfortable coming here and asking for help as I'll feel like I'm bothering you too much. Are you employed by MS to provide tech support here? I guess I should warn you that I go through spells of trying new things (I am currently preparing manuscripts for publication which means using lots of aspects of Word I have not used before...meaning more than as a typewriter) and tend to have lots of questions. I've been coming to usenet for many (!!!!!) years to seek help in all kinds of topics cause there are lots of people in a newsgroup usually and you can just ask away and hope somebody helps. Doesn't seem to work like that in this group so forgive me if I am asking lots of questions for a while. Sarah |

... Thank you Beth. I will try checking for an Adobe fix, saving in the VB editor, and finally removing the Adobe plug in. Hopefully something will finally work for you. :-) I have an unrelated question I was going to post, but I have to be honest, it seems like you are single handedly fielding all the questions for help here. It makes me a little uncomfortable coming here and asking for help as I'll feel like I'm bothering you too much. Are you employed by MS to provide tech support here? While Microsoft hosts the newsgroups (and created an interface to access them on their web site), they are part of Usenet and are peer-to-peer support groups. No one gets paid to answer questions -- it's all volunteer. Although MS does have some 'managed newsgroups' in which MS support may answer a question that ends up here so occasionally you'll see a response from a MS employee (I think most they are contractual, though.) I guess I should warn you that I go through spells of trying new things (I am currently preparing manuscripts for publication which means using lots of aspects of Word I have not used before...meaning more than as a typewriter) and tend to have lots of questions. Doesn't seem to work like that in this group so forgive me if I am asking lots of questions for a while. That's the way it works here too but if you have specific Word questions you may find faster responses if you to post them to one of the topic-specific Word newsgroups. There's one for just about each type of question you may have along with a broader Word audience. Around here you may need to wait for someone who knows Word to come along. :-) Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup.
