Default RD on typing 'RD' reference is deleted

Hi, Red. Before you start typing field codes, turn on display of hidden
text. The easiest way to do this is to press the ¶ button (Show All) on
the Standard toolbar at the top of your screen. Toggle off Show All by
pressing the ¶ button again.

I am using Word 2003 and am trying to use RD to create a TOC for
multiple docs.

My problem is that when I try to type {RD 'file.doc'} s soon as I type
the 'D' of RD the curly brackets disappear.
i.e. if I type '{ TOC }{RD }' I get '{ TOC }'

I am trying to type the equivalent of:
{ TOC }
{ RD C:\\Manual\\Chapters\\Chapter1.doc }
{ RD C:\\Manual\\Chapters\\Chapter2.doc }
{ RD C:\\Manual\\Chapters\\Chapter3.doc }

I would be very grateful if anyone can tell me what is going wrong!

Many Thanks

Redge.
