Well it is often used as slang for transmission. For example the lovely
Marisa Tomei as Mona Lisa Vito in My Cousin Vinny used the term "tranny" to
describe the transmission in a metallic mint green 1963 Pontiac Tempest,
with a white convertible top, Michelin Model XGV tires, size 75-R-14.

Also slang for transistor radio, transsexual, transvestite.

In the context of print production, it means 'transparency' (at least in my
part of the world). Not much needed any more, but there was a time when
creating a publication meant dealing with the text and graphics separately.
You created the text artwork as black-on-white, and glued in blocks of red
(called 'ruby') where the graphics were to go. Then that was photographed to
create a large negative. Then the 'trannies' (the graphics, photographed
separately) were stripped in.

A very enjoyable film, and even though I recognise that dialogue and know
where it comes in the film, there is no way in the world I could have quoted
it - you must have seen it many times :-)

When we bought a DVD player, it was the first DVD we bought. There aren't
many movies we care about seeing more than once, but that's one we never
tire of--and we love to show it for people we've never seen it. When my
daughter went to Harvard, people sometimes asked her if Alabama was really
like "My Cousin Vinny." She always said (with tongue firmly in cheek),
"Exactly."
