When was Word 2.0 for Windows released?
Hi All,
Could someone please tell me what was the release date or life cycle, along with requirements like OS version, memory, or disk space for Word for Windows 2.0? I would like to drop the support for converting from HTML to Word 2.0 in my application but want to make sure that Word 2.x is probably out of date for most of today's users. However, I cannot find anything like this on the MS site or from Google at all. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sam |

When was Word 2.0 for Windows released?
Somewhere I have a Microsoft timeline that includes this info, but I can't
find it. FWIW, however, I got my first computer in 1992 and acquired Word 2.0 shortly thereafter. My manual is © 1991. Unlike most current manuals, which begin with installation instructions (including system requirements), this one merely says that before you can install Word you have to install Windows (3.0 at that time). Actually, I see there is an entirely separate "Getting Started" manual. Hardware and software requirements are listed as follows: To use Word, your computer must meet the following requirements: * A DOS system computer with an Intel 286 microprocessor or greater, with a hard drive and a 1.2-MB or greater floppy disk drive. * 1 MB of RAM for the basic Word program. To use all features, including Graph, Draw, Equation Editor, WordArt, and grammar checking, 2 MB of RAM is required. * Enhanced graphics adapter (EGA) monitor or better resolution. * Microsoft Windows version 3.0 or later. In addition, a Microsoft or IBM PS/2 mouse is recommended, but not required. -- Suzanne S. When was Word 2.0 for Windows released?
Hi Sam
Regarding dropping support for Word 2.0 in your application, I'd say the release date and Microsoft's official life cycle are largely irrelevant. What matters is what your current and prospective customers need. If the frequency of questions seen in these newsgroups is any indicator, there are extremely few copies of Word 2.0 still in use. There are a few folks who collect "old" software and have every version of Word ever released, but I doubt even they still do any productive work in 2.0. At this point we get only the occasional question about Word 6.0. "Suzanne S. Barnhill" wrote: Somewhere I have a Microsoft timeline that includes this info, but I can't find it.
