Default Unable to use emdash option

I have followed the instructions and gone to the "auto format as you type"
window, and checked the change hyphen to emdash box, but I can still only
type hyphens

You might be looking for it too soon. If you type a word, then two hyphens, and
then another word followed by a space or punctuation, the two hyphens are
replaced by an em dash only at the very end of that sequence.

If you put a space before the two hyphens, the result is an en dash (but again,
not until the character after the next word).

Other ways to get an em dash are the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+number pad minus, or to
hold the Alt key while typing 0151 on the number pad.
