Default Address Book will not come up using Fax Wizard

That is why I told you to import
your WAB through Outlook Express.

.... which I did

Your error messages mean that you still have not configured the Outlook
Address Book correctly. I cannot tell what you did wrong. I posted the
instructions. Reread them.

I did what you said re configuring, and have details below of the way
everything looks now.

At this point I want you to look in the Outlook Contacts Folder. Were your
fax Contacts imported and do they appear correctly? If so, we can move to
the next step.

No, nothing got imported. The only entry is the one I was able to get into the
folder I created. I cannot even make new entries into the Contacts folder. See
below.

////////////////////////////////

Russ, I tried below to give you everything I have at present. Hopefully you can
help me clean up the operation of the Address Book so I have only the file I
need in Outlook (I have two, and suspect one is not needed) and get rid of the
error messages.

WINDOWS DESKTOP
Start - Control Panel - Internet Options - Programs:
Contact List is Microsoft Outlook

OUTLOOK

File - Data File Management:
Outlook Data Files shows two entries:
Name: Personal Folders
Filename: C:\Documents and Settings\Neil and Carol\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst
Comment: (blank)
and
Name: Personal Folders
Filename: C:\Documents and Settings\Neil and Carol\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook1.pst
Comment: Mail delivery l...

View - View Folders List:
Folder List shows two headings:
Outlook Today - [Personal Folders] -- underneath it is Calendar, Contacts, etc.
(10 altogether)
Personal Folders -- underneath it is Calendar, Contacts, etc. (10 altogether)
Clicking on Contacts in the first heading shows an entry I made manually when I
set up Fax Contacts set up 6-19-04 following the instructions from the
Microsoft Web Site address you gave me. Clicking on the Contacts icon in the
Outlook shortcuts column also show the same entry.
Clicking on Contacts in the second heading shows "there are no items ... "

Wondering if when I did that set up, following the instructions from the
Microsoft Web Site, that I set up a second Folder in Folder List, and did not
have to -- that I was supposed to select Personal Folders (the second folder),
select Contacts, then in File - Folder - Properties for Contacts check off
"Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book."

Tools - Address Book
Error message: "The address list cannot be displayed. The contacts folder
associated with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved
or deleted, or you do not gave permisssions. For information on how to remove
this folder from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Outlook Help."
Click OK and the Address Book comes up anyway, and I can select Fax Contacts
set up 6-19-04 and see the entry I made manually.

SENDING A FAX FROM NOTEPAD

If I go to Notepad to send a fax and go throught the Fax Wizard, clicking on
Address Book gives the same sequence as directly above (error message - OK -
Address Book) -- then I can select the fax number I put in Fax Contacts set up
6-19-04 and send the fax. I can also make new entries into Fax Contacts set up
6-19-04. However, if I try to move ahead with making a New entry into Contacts
I get the error message as above. In the New Entry Window, there is a choice to
make the New Entry into Contacts, but if I try that, I get two error messages:
"A new entry could not be added. Please use the contacts module to create this
entry" followed by a second error message: "A new entry could not be added. The
action could not be completed."

I can also select the main heading Outlook Address Book (Contacts and Fax
Contacts set up 6-19-04 are below that as sub-entries) and click on New. The
New Entry window opens. No matter what choices I make there, I get the error
message: "A new entry could not be added. Please use the contacts module to
create this entry" followed by a second error message: "A new entry could not
be added. The action could not be completed."

Whatever you did has created corrupt profile. Do either of these PST files
contain any information you need? If not, just create a new profile scratch
and then try your import from OE again. Read this first so you understand

Whatever you did has created corrupt profile. Do either of these PST files
contain any information you need?

When I open Outlook, then File-Open, and open either of the pst files, the
exact same data comes up. Strange, because Outlook1.pst is 528K and Outlook.pst
is 80K. There is also a extend.dat file that is 2K.

If not, just create a new profile scratch

I have already spent a lot of time entering my teaching schedule, etc. into
Calendar. When you say "create a new profile" are you saying to move the 3
files above to a Hold directory, start Outlook, and begin again?

I went to Outlook's Help menu, and entered Profile. The instructions that come
up for Change Profile apparently are not for XP.

Just create a new profile. Configure it to use the PST file you want.

Default Address Book will not come up using Fax Wizard

Hi Russ,

I did some cleaning up, and now understand more of how Outlook works. I now
have only the Outlook Today - [Personal Folders] heading, with the 10 folders
under it, and its file is outlook.pst. I followed the instructions using the
Outlook Address Book tab in File-Folder-Properties for Contacts and named it
Fax Contacts. I imported the *.wab file successfully. But when I click on fax
wizard addresses (and still get the address list cannot be displayed message)
there is a duplicate for every fax name. I tried every which way of doing the
importing and the duplicates are always there. And if I delete one of each
pair, both of the pair disappear.

Because I have only about 20 contacts, I'll probably just enter them by copy
and paste, unless you have a quick way for me to eliminate the duplicates,
which would also help others following this thread. It would also be nice to
get rid of the error message. And I still don't understand why I can't enter a
New entry into Contacts in the Fax Wizard -- can only do so to Fax Contacts.

Thanks as usual.

For anyone reading this thread, the sequence for importing the Windows Address
Book to Outlook Contacts is:
select Contacts
File-Import and Export
Import Internet Mail and Addresses
Microsoft Internet Mail 3.x
Outlook Contacts Folder
Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Address
Book\username.wab

You named what "Fax Contacts?" You can't rename a default Outlook folder.
You should have imported into your default Contacts Folder, then moved them
to a separate subfolder if that's what you wanted to do.
How many Contact Folders do you now have? What exactly is listed when you go
to Tools E-mail accounts View or change existing directories or address
books Outlook Address Book Change.
You'll likely need to remove and re-add the Outlook Address Book Service in
your Profile to fix the corruption after you straighten out your Contacts
Folders.

You named what "Fax Contacts?" You can't rename a default Outlook folder.

After selecting Contacts, then File - Folder - Properties for Contacts, then
Outlook Address Book tab, I had to check off the box: Show this folder as an
e-mail address book. Then I had to name it. I named it Fax Contacts.

You should have imported into your default Contacts Folder, then moved them
to a separate subfolder if that's what you wanted to do.

When I do that, the *wab file does get properly imported into Outlook. But
other than the listings appearing there, I'm right back where I started.
Printing to Fax and clicking on Address Book gives the error message, opens the
Address Book, and no list of contacts under Contacts is there and New does not
work. However, the imported list does show in the Print to Fax sequence, with
two listings for each name, if I check Show this folder as an e-mail address
book (as above) and leave the name Contacts in the name box (instead of calling
it Fax Contacts). The only difference is that in the Print to Fax sequence,
there are now two Contacts subheadings under Outlook Address Book, and the
second one shows the list of contacts with two for each name.

How many Contact Folders do you now have?

One -- I never created another folder other than what was required in the File
- Folder - Properties for Contacts, then Outlook Address Book tab sequence.

What exactly is listed when you go
to Tools E-mail accounts View or change existing directories or address
books Outlook Address Book Change.

You corrupted your Outlook Address Book Service.
Never rename your default Contacts Folder.
Remove and re-add the Outlook Address Book Service. You should only have one
instance "Contacts Personal Folders" in the Outlook Address Book.

I didn't, because that cannot be done. Select Contacts, then File - Folders.
The rename option is grayed.

Remove and re-add the Outlook Address Book Service.
You should only have one instance "Contacts Personal Folders" in the Outlook

Address Book.

I have done the removal and add several times in my experimenting by checking
and unchecking the Show this folder as an e-mail address book box. But the only
way for the Outlook Address Book to show up in the Print Fax sequence is to
check the Show this folder as an e-mail address book box and accept Contacts as
the name, or use another name (like Fax Contacts). That process creates the
second entry that shows up in the Outlook Address Book as a second Contacts
Personal Folders.
