problems initiating mplay32.exe
i am experiencing problems with initiating the media player or inserting files into powerpoint that is played by the media player. also when i insert quicktime files it says that the file types is not recognised by quicktime either (files not recognised or quicktime not properly installed), although it is a quicktime movie (quicktime 6.5.1).
there seems to be a lot of problems initiating visual files. I can however insert and play audio files in powerpoint with media player 9. I have updated the MCI settings and they are correct. so are my codecs. powerpoint also says that it has encountered a problem that it can't fix and i must shut down and restart. having done that a couple of times, it keeps on saying it. also detected and repaired but still the same. |

I suspect it's a simple issue here -- PPT and QT don't play well together.
PPT will handle QT versions 1, 2, and 2.5. All other bets are off. problems initiating mplay32.exe
hi marlene,
often windows comes into problems with media player when 3rd party players or codecs are installed on "top" of microsoft media player. let me explain, if you examine your audio codecs, yes everything can look fine, however, you may find that for example if you click on a windows media file in your browser and attempt to open it. explorer will retunr an error message and close the browser returning the dreaded "send error report to microsoft" blurb. i have experienced this problem myself personally on win 2000. the only way i could solve it in the end marlene was to view the error report generated in internet explorer. i feel terrible now that i cant remember the error code, but i can promise you this. when you follow the error report and view the error, microsoft recommend that you visit a site where you are able to download a free codec revision that corrects this error. i did, and the error was corrected. for me, the error was due to a conflicting codec which i could not detect through the system control panel and codec property settings. i know that this post seems very vaque. but i promise if you go to a website with an .mpg media file on it and click the file which would normally open, follow the error report from explorer and the advice from the microsoft database from there. it worked for me. and it sounds as though you are experiencing the exact problems i did. i know its been vaque marlene, but try to click on a media link in explorer and follow the error report as i say, and you'll be fine. i hope i've been of some help. if you have any further problems on this error, you could contact, james, one of my audio staff at http://www.123powerpoint.com. he is much more versed in codecs than myself, and the various errors and solutions to media player, i'm sure that if you are unable to solve this problem, his knowledge will be of benefit. i'm sorry that i have been so late in responding to your post. but hope that my response provides some assistance. problems initiating mplay32.exe
thank you so much for you advice scott, I have tried to open all sorts of media files in my explorer browser and they all work fine, no problems opening sound or video files, so I think the problem lies somewhere in powerpoint.
ECHO i am on windows 2000 professional, powerpoint 2000 and windows media player 9. i insert files by either doing one of the following - insert media or audio file from library or file, or by inserting an object (insert the video for windows or audio depending") it seems that i can insert files through hyperlinks successfully at the moment but in no other way (i want the images of the first frame to appear in stead of words which is why i am going to all this trouble) 2. updated MCI in registry by running "regedit" did not go to the INI files. 3. when i go to run mplay32.exe my files do not play there, it says "mplay has encoutered an error and will be closed by windows the program has to be restarted, an error log has been created" 4. will read sonia coleman's article, changed MCI settings with article that she provided. the message that appears either can not start mplay32.exe and "pp has encountered an error it can not fix when i open the presentation that i was working on - i must have done something really really weird. In fact what happened is that i edited a sound file in Vegas, saved it as a wave file and inserted it into powerpoint by clicking "insert sound from file" it played the audio fine but refused to play any visual files, and started giving me the message above. Now when i try to insert any media (video or audio) files in any presentations i get the message "found an error that it can't correct". it would also not open the presentation i was working on, i have to open in through my windows explorer. I have deleted the audio file that i think caused the problem but it did not seem to help. -- thanks for your help "Scott Harvey" wrote: hi marlene, often windows comes into problems with media player when 3rd party players or codecs are installed on "top" of microsoft media player. let me explain, if you examine your audio codecs, yes everything can look fine, however, you may find that for example if you click on a windows media file in your browser and attempt to open it. explorer will retunr an error message and close the browser returning the dreaded "send error report to microsoft" blurb. i have experienced this problem myself personally on win 2000. the only way i could solve it in the end marlene was to view the error report generated in internet explorer. i feel terrible now that i cant remember the error code, but i can promise you this. when you follow the error report and view the error, microsoft recommend that you visit a site where you are able to download a free codec revision that corrects this error. i did, and the error was corrected. for me, the error was due to a conflicting codec which i could not detect through the system control panel and codec property settings. i know that this post seems very vaque. but i promise if you go to a website with an .mpg media file on it and click the file which would normally open, follow the error report from explorer and the advice from the microsoft database from there. it worked for me. and it sounds as though you are experiencing the exact problems i did. i know its been vaque marlene, but try to click on a media link in explorer and follow the error report as i say, and you'll be fine. i hope i've been of some help. if you have any further problems on this error, you could contact, james, one of my audio staff at http://www.123powerpoint.com. he is much more versed in codecs than myself, and the various errors and solutions to media player, i'm sure that if you are unable to solve this problem, his knowledge will be of benefit. i'm sorry that i have been so late in responding to your post. but hope that my response provides some assistance. problems initiating mplay32.exe
hi there
answers to your questions 1. inserting files through following methods: * insert audio from file or insert video from file i also use insert object, then click insert clip, video for windows and select the file - i have experimented with all these and succeeded with different file extensions i recently inserted a Vegas file - audio - and that is when my troubles started, the audio file plays (wav) but none of the video files that used to play would play any more, that is also when all the "shut down programme and found an error it can not corect" started. i deleted the audio file but it still does not help. 2. windows 2000 and powerpoint 2000 3. inserted MCI through regedit as per article on sonia's site 4. codecs - tested mplay32.exe to play a file (movie clip) that previosly played - it gives me the message "... has encountered a problem and will shut down, an error log is being created" - the same message that i get when trying to play/insert a file in ppoint i tried the same procedure with a wma (audio) file and it played. 5. encountered problem occurs when i try to insert any kind of file in new powerpoint presentation, also when i open the presentation that i was working on - powerpiont won't allow me to open the file at all, i can access it through my windows explorer though but when i try to do anything with media files i get the problem message. thanks for your help "Echo S" wrote: To be honest, I was having a hard time following in the post what all is going on on your system. problems initiating mplay32.exe
Thanks for those details, Marlene. That helps tremendously.
Opening the media files in Internet Explorer relies on Windows Media Player to play them. Sounds as if your files are playing in WMP, which is why they'll also play in IE. PPT 2000, on the other hand, relies on the MCI Media Player to play multimedia files. MCI Media Player is mplay32.exe, and that's why I was asking what happens when you try to play the files there. Usually that's the acid text -- if the file won't play in mplay32.exe (MCI Media Player), it won't play in PPT, either. Glad to hear you updated your MCI settings in the registry and read through the article on Sonia's site -- that should help you at least understand more about how PPT handles multimedia. I think the issue here lies in your MCI Media Player. But since you used to be able to insert media files (WAVs from Vegas), I'd first try opening PPT and going to Help/Detect and Repair. It's a simple thing to do, and it won't hurt to try. We use Vegas at my office, and the WAV files it creates shouldn't cause you problems -- unless you set variable bitrates or something odd in them when rendering the files. On the video end, the the Vegas WMVs generally work well, as do the AVIs, depending on what codecs you choose. The MPEGs with mainconcept codecs seem to be fairly workable on most systems as well. So I don't think the problem is the Vegas software, anyway. You may want to download and install the NIMO codec pack mentioned at section 4 of http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorial...multimedia.htm It may well be that you're missing standard codecs or something's happened to overwrite them, and that's what's causing MCI Media Player fits. You might also want to run through MS's PPT 2000 Movie Troubleshooter at http://support.microsoft.com/default...%2Fdefault.asp It's a step-by-step approach to resolving basic audio/video problems. I would suggest that you create a folder on your C drive -- maybe C:\videotest or something like that -- while you're working through this issue. Create a blank presentation with a couple of slides, and put your video files in that folder as well. This will help in 2 ways: 1. MCI Media Player has a path length limit of, mmm, 124 or 128 characters. If the presentation and video files are buried too deeply within a folder heirarchy, the path to them can become quite long. C:\videotest\ would be just a few characters, and so that will help you determine if the problem is simply a path length issue. If you're using Insert/Movie or Sound/From Clip Gallery (which is what I assume you mean by "library" below), that could be contributing to the problem. That can create very long path lengths, as the Clip Gallery files are really buried; if your movies aren't acutally deep in the system heirarchy, but you insert them via Clip Gallery, I'm not really sure what kind of paths that creates, to tell the truth. So try to stick with Insert/Movie or Sound/From File. 2. "PPT found an error it can't correct" is PPT's way of saying that it thinks the presentation is corrupt. I've been running into this in the past couple of weeks with both PPT and the new PPT Viewer, as a matter of fact. For example, just Friday I inserted some video files into a presentation, but they weren't playing correctly in PPT. I thought it was just an issue on my machine, so I put the PPT file and videos on the server with the new PPT Viewer files for a colleague to check. The new PPT Viewer wouldn't even open the file and gave an error similar to what you're seeing. Deleting the entire slides with the problem video and recreating them in PPT resolved the problem -- in both PPT and in the Viewer. So it may be that continuing to mess with the video in your presentations which are already having problems won't help resolve anything, as you're not seeing a true picture of what's happening with the media and PPT. For this reason, I suggest that you experiment on a new blank presentation. Once you know the problem with MCI Media Player is resolved, you can then return to the problem presentation(s) with confidence that the issue is just with that presentation and not system-wide. Finally, re this: 3. when i go to run mplay32.exe my files do not play there, it says "mplay has encoutered an error and will be closed by windows the program has to be restarted, an error log has been created" Is there any way you can find that error log? -- Echo [MS PPT MVP] http://www.echosvoice.com presenter, PPT Live '04 Oct 10-13, San Diego http://www.powerpointlive.com "marlene" wrote: thank you so much for you advice scott, I have tried to open all sorts of media files in my explorer browser and they all work fine, no problems opening sound or video files, so I think the problem lies somewhere in powerpoint. problems initiating mplay32.exe
hallo there
I have done what you suggested and even went as far as reinstalling powerpoint 2000 on my computer - it seems the problem is with how powerpoint communicates with the mplayer because I can not insert any files when i click " insert move files from gallery or from file - no file extensions work there and powerpoint tells me it found an error it can't fix. where should I look for the log files? what kind of names would the logs have, tried to look but can't seem to find them. also the registry extensions for MCI that i found on the microsoft website vary greatly from the extensions in the powerpoint tutorial from sonia, which one to follow? I have also dowloaded the Nimo light pack of codecs but they seem to sit under programmes and when i check the codecs in control panel they are not listed there. I don't see an exe file that will install the codecs, can anybody help me on how to do this please. -- thanks for your help "marlene" wrote: hi there answers to your questions 1. inserting files through following methods: * insert audio from file or insert video from file i also use insert object, then click insert clip, video for windows and select the file - i have experimented with all these and succeeded with different file extensions i recently inserted a Vegas file - audio - and that is when my troubles started, the audio file plays (wav) but none of the video files that used to play would play any more, that is also when all the "shut down programme and found an error it can not corect" started. i deleted the audio file but it still does not help. 2. windows 2000 and powerpoint 2000 3. inserted MCI through regedit as per article on sonia's site 4. codecs - tested mplay32.exe to play a file (movie clip) that previosly played - it gives me the message "... has encountered a problem and will shut down, an error log is being created" - the same message that i get when trying to play/insert a file in ppoint i tried the same procedure with a wma (audio) file and it played. 5. encountered problem occurs when i try to insert any kind of file in new powerpoint presentation, also when i open the presentation that i was working on - powerpiont won't allow me to open the file at all, i can access it through my windows explorer though but when i try to do anything with media files i get the problem message. thanks for your help "Echo S" wrote: To be honest, I was having a hard time following in the post what all is going on on your system. So let's start he there seems to be a lot of problems initiating visual files. I can however insert and play audio files in powerpoint with media player 9. I have updated the MCI settings and they are correct. so are my codecs. How are you going about inserting and playing audio files in PPT with Windows Media Player 9? What version of PPT? What version of Windows? Assuming Win2k or XP, where did you update the MCI settings -- in the registry, or just in the INI files? What codecs do your videos use? Have you tested them using Start/Run and typing mplay32.exe? Do they play there? Have you read http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorial...multimedia.htm ? powerpoint also says that it has encountered a problem that it can't fix and i must shut down and restart. having done that a couple of times, it keeps on saying it. also detected and repaired but still the same. When does this "encountered a problem" error occur? -- Echo [MS PPT MVP] http://www.echosvoice.com presenter, PPT Live '04 Oct 10-13, San Diego http://www.powerpointlive.com "marlene" wrote: thanks, had a look and i understand why quicktime won't work properly, but what about mplayer32.exe problems in powerpoint that won't let me insert windows media files either? -- thanks for your help "Echo S" wrote: I suspect it's a simple issue here -- PPT and QT don't play well together. PPT will handle QT versions 1, 2, and 2.5. All other bets are off.
