Default Update - Microsoft Responds to the Evolution of Community

What is Happening?
This message is to inform you that Microsoft will soon begin discontinuing
newsgroups and transitioning users to Microsoft forums.

Why?
As you may know, newsgroups have existed for many years now; however, the
traffic in the Microsoft newsgroups has been steadily decreasing for the
past several years while customers and participants are increasingly finding
solutions in the forums on Microsoft properties and third party sites. This
move will unify the customer experience, centralize content, make it easier
for active contributors to retain their influence, mitigate redundancies and
make the content easier to find by customers and search engines through
improved indexing. Additionally, forums offer a better user and spam
management platform that will improve customer satisfaction by encouraging a
healthy discussion in a clean community space. To this end, Microsoft will
begin to progressively shift available resources to the forums technology
and discontinue support for newsgroups.

In addition to offering a compelling online browser experience, for those
users who prefer to use an NNTP (newsgroup) reader to participate in the
newsgroups community, we have developed a solution called the NNTP Bridge
which allows a user to connect a variety of supported NNTP readers to the
forums they would like to participate in and continue having the NTTP reader
functionality. You can find instructions on how to download and set up the
NNTP Bridge he http://connect.microsoft.com/MicrosoftForums/

Which Newsgroups Are Affected by this Shutdown?
All public newsgroups will eventually be closed between June 1, 2010 and
October 1, 2010. Microsoft will be closing newsgroups in a phased approach,
starting with the least active newsgroups and moving eventually to more
active ones throughout the course of the next six months.

Where Should I go with the Closure of this Newsgroup?
In an effort to enhance and improve your experience, this newsgroup is scheduled for closure in the upcoming months and we would like to invite you to participate in this forum or forum category: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...addbuz/threads . An exact date will be posted in advance as plans are finalized.

Can anybody see where there is a real Access section in the "forum"

From what I can (at first look) see there isn't. Seems like just the
usual Microsoft style - vague spotty mess - just tips on Access 2007.

Maybe their "third party sites" is the direction. First leave Microsoft
for the info, then migrate to Open Office.

I can't agree with you more Fred. Their site is a mess. See my reply to
their cross-posting at the "Forms" group

http://www.microsoft.com/office/comm...8-b4f7ebe187fd

MS is messing this one up IMHO! Did they not ever consider speaking with
the users? They are just dropping this into place without even doing a first
round of testing to solve evident problems?! As you said "Maybe their "third
party sites" is the direction" to take. Just a mess!

Where exactly are the MS Access 'forum's. I just spent 30 minutes looking for
it. Got several javascript runtime errors in the web pages - and I'm using
Internet Explorer!

Maybe they moved the "customer non-input" folks who planned Vista over to
"plan" this.

Yes, that is pretty much my opinion. While these groups are open, I'm happy
to drop by and return some of the benefit I got from these groups 15 years
ago. When these groups are gone, I guess so am I.

I will miss the politeness and the helpfulness of the long time contributors
like Tony -- there is nothing like that anywhere on news.gmane.org -- so I'm
not likely to spend much time with the arrogant self-important vanity of any
Open Source groups.

It must be that the Progressives have gotten control at MS just as
they have in two of the three branches of the US government. All on
their own they decide what is best for the universe and our roles
within it and then dictate to us what will transpire without the
option.! These Access mewsgrps are a terrific source of help to
Access developers at all levels and have been for a long, long time.
I believe that they have contributed more to Access's dominance in the
marketplace than MS or anyone else acknowledges.

Don't despair. It doesn't require the support of Microsoft to have
newsgroups that support Access or any other interest. If there are
sufficient people who want to make it real then there is no bar to
continuing them. In the early days there was a tremendous spirit of
contribution. Many of the pioneers have gone on to establish and
support their own web sites and many of them still drop in to
contribute here.

Maybe we could discuss here picking one of them and then everybody urge
everybody to switch to it. Give it the critical mass to become a/the main
Access one.

My vote would be to find one that also has at least a tiny bit on Open
Office DB and very low low end SQL server.

Maybe we should discuss and pick one of those groups for everybody to
recommend to everybody. That might give it the critical mass to become the
replacement for this (for Access)

My vote would be for one that has at least covers Open Office DB and low end
SQL server a bit.
