Default Critical Update Problem

I've waited all day for someone else to mention this
problem but haven't seen it yet. When I went online this
morning, I got a Critical Update notice. It was for the
Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1. I DL'd it w/o a problem.
But it couldn't install properly. B/c of my current settings,
it encountered an "exception" that prevented it from
happening.

ProcessID=0fx6e9fa5d (-152438179)
ThreadID= 0xf6e841b9 (-152550983)

It tells me I can press OK to abort the installation, or
Cancel to attempt a manual installation. I tried to do it
twice, but being so slow, I still didn't know how long to
wait, even when it reached the end of the "line" and
appeared to be finished.

Any ideas what I need to change for it to install
properly? Thanks!

P.S. Yes, I know this is likely not the place to ask. But this
is the only Microsoft public news group I read daily, and since
I don't know the cause (likely my Explorer settings?), I don't
the right NG to post it. But I figure I at least recognize the
names of the "volunteers" right away & can find the right one...

You're posting to Outlook Express. You should post to the OS NG that
you are using. Let me know and I'll send you in the right direction.

Cross-posted to Windows Update newsgroup.

To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should be disabled
and all other running processes closed before installing anything, including
Windows Updates.
