Default Excel Formula

Hi All,

I just want to seek help regarding copying formula. Is
it possible to copy one formula from one workbook to
another? I've been trying to do that but when i tried to
copy a cell that contains a formula to another workbook,
it only pastes the result and not the formula. Example:

workbook1:Sheet1
cell C1 contains a formula that adds A1 and B1
Lets say the result is 2 from the formula =sum(A1:B1)

when I copy cell C1 to
workbook2:Sheet1:Cell C1, it copies the result which is 2
and not the formula.

why is that? and is there a way where i can copy a
formula from workbook to workbook?

Thanks for any help.

Regards,
Yuki

Hi

doesn't behave this way for me .. one idea, the second workbook is set to
calculate manually ... tools / options / calculation tab

if that's not the case - what shows in the formula bar on the second
workbook after the paste?
how are you pasting the data?

Cheers

Hi Yuki,

Try copying from the formula bar, not the actual cell.
Then paste into the formula bar.

Hi Julie,

actually, i have 2 excel applications opened, so it
means, 2 workbooks, both of which have settings to
caculate manually. I copy the cell that contains the
formula and when i paste it on the other opened workbook,
it only shows the result of the cell that i copied, like
if i copied the cell that contains the number 2 (which is
the result of the formula), the formula bar shows the
number 2, not the formula.

Regards,
Yuki

Hi Don,

Thanks for the suggestion. how about if i have 2 excel
applications opened, when i tried to copy the formula
from the formula bar and paste it to the other opened
excel file, it can copy the formula, but it doesn't
follow the pattern of cells unlike when you paste it on
the next sheet of the same workbook.

Example is when you copy the formula on cell C1 (=sum
(A1:B1)) to the next sheet and paste it on cell D2, it
will compute the cells which is on its horizontal line,
so the pasted formula becomes =sum(A2:B2). But if you
paste the formula on the other opened file, the formula
will be copied as is. So if you copy the formula on any
cell the formula will still be =sum(A1:B1). Is there a
way where i can copy the formula without editing it when
i paste it to the other opened excel file?

Thanks.

Regards,
yuki

Hi again Yuki,

Not sure I completely understand what you're after here
but try this.....maybe it'll work for you:

Copy the "Cell" (not the formula bar) and
pastespecial/formula into the "Cell" on the other sheet.
That should maintain the relationship between the cells on
the second sheet and not create a link to the first sheet.

I do not too know much about Excel but if I have the function
=IF(K50,$J$3/J5/24,"") and want to copy it to another work sheet I
click on the function and precede it with an apostrphe
ie. add in a '=IF(K50,$J$3/J5/24,"")
then copy it to where I want it.
