Creating a drawing for low level data communication messages (byte level)

I was hoping that someone could let me know how they had gone about displaying/representing the format/makeup of low level data communication messages. I have looked around within Visio Professional 2003 and I haven't come across a good solution as yet.

I'm currently using the memory objects, but this is not at all ideal. It is at least clear for anyone looking at the documenation once I have completed it, but it is quite time consuming to produce and not all that easy to update/change.

Not quite sure what you are looking for when you say "format/makeup of low
level data communications messages". For a project to illustrate dataflows
at different OSI levels I put the connections onto different layers in the
diagram and then color coded the layers (i.e. app, middleware, data level,
etc.). The data was gathered by reducing Sniffer (the real NAI product)
expert objects and then correlating them with the autodiscovery data from
v2002 VENT.
