Can't configure contacts to be an email address book
Here is my problem. I can't make my contacts my address book.
Here are the symptons. 1 - The contacts folder seems to work OK. I can send email from it, add names, etc. 2 - When I try to access the contct info from "new" to make a new email message or from "reply" or "forward" an existing email message, no names or lists appear. 3 - When I right click on "contacts", choose "properties", choose the "outlook address book" tab, it show that "contacts" is the address book, but the check box for "show this folder as an email address book" is grayed out. 4 - In Outlook, if I go to "tools", "options", "mail setup", " email accounts", "View or change exisitng directories or address book", I see "Outlook address book MAPI" highlighted. I say "change" and get this message: "This email account cannot be configured. Please run outloook and choose this profile before attempting to make changes to it." 5 - In Outlook, if I go to "tools", "options", "mail setup", "email accounts", "Add new directory or address book", "Addtional Addresss Books", I get 2 choices "Outlook Address Book" and "Personal Address Book". Choosing either of these gives me the same message: "The account you have added is not fully configured. It might not work properly until re-configured correctly." 6 - In Outlook, if I go to "tools", "options", "mail setup", " email accounts", "View or change exisitng directories or address book", I see "Outlook address book MAPI" highlighted, I say "finish". I get no message, but it doesn't fix the problem. 7 - I right click on "Outlook Today folder", choose "properties for outlook today" and get "personal folders properties". I choose "general", "advanced" and get this error message: "The information services cannot be configured. Either the information service does not possess properties required for configutation, or the MAPI configuration file entry point could not be determined." 8 - If I try to add a new contact folder, it also has the check box for "show this folder as an email address book" grayed out. 9 - I "repaired" XP office and this did not solve the problem. HELP!!!! Thank you. |

Just remove the Outlook Address Book Service.
Restart Outlook and add it back. Then make sure your Contacts Folders are enabled as email address books. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "sandra" wrote in message ... Here is my problem. Do I do this through "tools", "options", "mail setup", " email accounts",
"View or change exisitng directories or address book", and then remove them? Then do I do this through "tools", "options", "mail setup", " email accounts", "View or change exisitng directories or address book", and and add it back? Which, the outlook or personal? Then do I go to "contacts", choose "properties", choose the "outlook address book" tab, it show that "contacts" is the address book, and the check box for "show this folder as an email address book" will be available? Yes to all.

This did not solve my problem. All of the same things happen as before. The
only differnece is that I no longer have the "Outlook Address book MAPI" noted in item 6 of my original list. The rest is all the same. Maybe I should uninstall and reinstall office XP? Maybe I should install it to a different folder? How can I save and retrieve the data from my mailboxes and calendar if I do this. My addresses are still in Outlook Express. It will work. I assume you have a valid mail transport in this profile?

This is EXACTLY what I TRY to do. However, I get error messages. My previous
posts show the EXACT error messages that I get when I try to do it. When you say "valid mail transport", do you mean email servie? If yes, then yes I do. The email function works fine. I can send and receive and compose, etc. I just have to input the receipent by hand rather than pull it from the contact list. I can go to the contact list, however, and ask Outlook to send a message to this person and then compose the email and send it. I think there is a disconnect somewhere between the contact folder and the address book recognized by the email editor. -Sandra "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote: It will work. Yes, you have a disconnect and removing the Outlook Address Book and
re-adding it will reset that connection. Sounds like you have a more serious Profile corruption. Create a new one from scratch. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "sandra" wrote in message ... Upgrading a corrupt installation will only likely make the problem worse.
Make sure you have a solidly working installation before you upgrade. I'm not a big fan of upgrade installations as it is. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "sandra" wrote in message ... I just bought office 2003. If I upgrade to 2003 and bring in my data, will the problem go away or will it stay? "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote: Yes, you have a disconnect and removing the Outlook Address Book and re-adding it will reset that connection. Sounds like you have a more serious Profile corruption. Create a new one from scratch. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "sandra" wrote in message ... This is EXACTLY what I TRY to do. However, I get error messages. My previous posts show the EXACT error messages that I get when I try to do it. I assume you have a valid mail transport in this profile? Just make sure you're doing things correctly. Read over the instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/default...Product=ol2002 -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "sandra" wrote in message ... This did not solve my problem. All of the same things happen as before. The only differnece is that I no longer have the "Outlook Address book MAPI" noted in item 6 of my original list. The rest is all the same. Maybe I should uninstall and reinstall office XP? Maybe I should install it to a different folder? How can I save and retrieve the data from my mailboxes and calendar if I do this. My addresses are still in Outlook Express. "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote: Yes to all. Your only either/or question was which address book to add. Outlook. Never Personal. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "sandra" wrote in message ... Do I do this through "tools", "options", "mail setup", " email accounts", "View or change exisitng directories or address book", and then remove them? Then do I do this through "tools", "options", "mail setup", " accounts", "View or change exisitng directories or address book", and and add it back? Which, the outlook or personal? Then do I go to "contacts", choose "properties", choose the "outlook address book" tab, it show that "contacts" is the address book, and the check box for "show this folder as an email address book" will be available? Thanks! "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote: Just remove the Outlook Address Book Service. Restart Outlook and add it back. Then make sure your Contacts Folders are enabled as email address books. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "sandra" wrote in message ... Here is my problem. I can't make my contacts my address book. Here are the symptons. 1 - The contacts folder seems to work OK. I can send email from it, add names, etc. 2 - When I try to access the contct info from "new" to make a new message or from "reply" or "forward" an existing email message, no names or lists appear. 3 - When I right click on "contacts", choose "properties", choose the "outlook address book" tab, it show that "contacts" is the address book, but the check box for "show this folder as an email address book" is grayed out. 4 - In Outlook, if I go to "tools", "options", "mail setup", " accounts", "View or change exisitng directories or address book", I see "Outlook address book MAPI" highlighted. I say "change" and get this message: "This email account cannot be configured. Please run outloook and choose this profile before attempting to make changes to it." 5 - In Outlook, if I go to "tools", "options", "mail setup", accounts", "Add new directory or address book", "Addtional Addresss Books", I get 2 choices "Outlook Address Book" and "Personal Address Book". Choosing either of these gives me the same message: "The account you have added is not fully configured. It might not work properly until re-configured correctly." 6 - In Outlook, if I go to "tools", "options", "mail setup", " accounts", "View or change exisitng directories or address book", I see "Outlook address book MAPI" highlighted, I say "finish". HELP!!!! Thank you. |
