Default Order of contacts in Select Names list

re Emailing...
When I click the little address book icon next to the "To" field in a new
Email I get a list of Email addresses.
I cannot figure out how this list is arranged.
If I have a contact in "My Contacts" with Full Name = Smith, John; and File
As = Smith, John; and Display As = Smith, John -- this person still comes up
as John Smith under "J" in the "Select Names" list.
Help!
Thanks,

Click ToolsE-mail AccountsView or change exosting directories or address
booksNext. Select Outlook Address Book and click Change. Set your display
order there. Click OK, then stop and restart Outlook.

Thanks, Brian -- that did the trick.
One of these days I'm going to try and figure out the difference between
"Contacts" and "Address Books".
Right now I'm really confused but my immediate problem is solved thanks to
you.

Good news.

One of these days I'm going to try and figure out the difference
between "Contacts" and "Address Books".

The Address Book in Outlook is a service Outlook uses to translate a name to
an address using one or more Contacts folders. In essence it is a view of
all entries in the contacts folders you have enabled as address books that
have electronic addresses (email and FAX) and provides a way to enter a name
and have Outlook locate the address. In one way. it's similar to a domain
name service that translates a domain name into an IP address.
