Default Excel formulas

Is it possible for data from several sheets in a workbook
to be brought forward to a collection sheet by selecting
the other sheets from a reference (a list of the other
Sheet names)on the first sheet i.e by not actually
selecting the second sheet. This to be achieved preferably
without resorting to a macro or VBA.

Sure, this is a basic function of Excel documents with multiple sheet tabs.
Let's say you want to show the date from sheet 3 cell B7 in sheet 1 (the
collection sheet) cell D9. In D9, type =, use the mouse to go to sheet 3,
and click on B7. If you want to copy additional cells to the right of or
down from B7, use the fill handle to do this in sheet 1.
