Default Publisher will not open its own files, says from different version

My Publisher 98 software will not open files created by it. I get a message
telling me that it cannot open files made in an earlier version.
It has worked without problem previously.
I have reinstalled both it and Office 2000 Pro repeatedly without success.
Any guidance welcomed please.

What version Windows?
There is a registry fix, not sure it addresses Publisher 98.
Error message when you try to open a publication in Publisher: "Publisher cannot
open the file" or "Publisher has detected a problem"

Hi Mary
The operating system is Win98 SP3.
The specific message is "Publisher cannot open files from a different
version".
Initially, there was no problem reading and working with files sent
regularly from a third party. After a reinstall of Pub 98 following a PC
failure the error message appeared BUT the same message appeared on a second
PC.
Aas a trial I loaded the PC 98 diskwhich had been used to used to create the
files but still they were not recognised.
To complicate matters on just one occasion one file did load but since then
all have failed.

Some of the security updates have made early versions of Publisher files
impossible to open. It didn't affect 98, at least it didn't affect my 98
Publisher on a Vista Ultimate computer.

What happens if you disable your virus software when you open Publisher? If I
remember correctly Publisher 98 had some problems with some virus programs.

You also might try using a different default printer. You don't need the
physical printer, just a driver. If the file opens you can select your preferred
printer and re-save. Just be certain you are using a driver for Windows 98.
