outlook contacts disapear

I have a user who has a large database of contacts in his .pst file, over
2000. He updates them with notes when he talks to those people, etc.
Recently, he is coming to me and saying some of them are missing. No one else
has access to his file, and I don't think it's user error, so I'm not sure
what to do at this point.

Any advice?
