ToC, ToC Styles, and ToC Tabs

Environment: Windows XP Professional V 2002 SP 3; Word 2007 SP2 MSO

I converted a document from Word 2003 to Word 2007. I am working with the
document in Word 2007.
The ToC has three levels H1, H2, and H3.
In the ToC, the three levels are indented as such:

1.0 Heading 1................................P#
1.1 Heading 2..........................P#
1.1.1 Heading 3.................P#

After converting the document to Word 2007, I generated the ToC. Here's the
result:

1.0 Heading 1................................P#
1.1 Heading 2..........................P#
1.1.1 Heading 3.................P#

What happened?

I assume that the problem may be associated with the tab stops assigned to
the style TOC 3. I manipulated the tab stops by opening the Tabs dialog box
(Alt+O+T). Any changes made did not solve the problem.

The number "1.1.1" is wide enough to extend beyond the tab set for the
text of that heading, so the tab-character after the number is taking
the text to the next tab stop. Move that first tab a little to the
right.

Would you move the tab stop a little to the right in

1) the ruler,
2) Tabs dialog box, or
3) another dialog box such as the Modify Style dialog box for the TOC 3 style?

In a ToC, "Update" is on by default, so moving it on the ruler (or the
dialog box) will cause the style to be modified (and all the 3-Head
ToC entries will show the change immediately).

Theoretically, you could do it in any of those places, since TOC styles are
by default set to automatically update.

However, my experience is that the TOC styles sometimes don't automatically
update, so I prefer to change the style itself. After I manually revise a
style, I go to the styles pane, click the arrow after the TOC style name,
and choose "Update ... to match selection".
