Default Auto compile word documents with different page layouts

I am trying to auto compile a series of word documents
(i.e. articles) to form a general publication. Some of
the articles require a 2-column page layout while others
do not.

Is it possible to auto compile a group of word documents
with different page formatting? I seem to lose the column
formatting on the pages when I auto compile them.

Is there a work around for this?

You'll need (at minimum) a sprinkling of section breaks. See
