Default ~WRL "file permission error" loses all of my word in Word

I keep losing all of my documents or sometimes only a portion since the
previously saved document. The message reads as "~WRLxxxx file permission
error" "XXXX" = four digit varied numbers each time.

I do not have a virus or bug. I have the latest updates in XP PRO and
Office 2003. I use Defender and One Care and have the latest updates for
that. I do not have a disc problem and do not need to de-fragment.

I am using my C drive in each case and when these error messages arrive, it
appears as if the software believes I am using a floppy or other removable
media. What is the cause of this and how do I fix it. I have lost a lot of
information (days of work) that can disappear seemingly at a whim of the
software.

Hi Rkasal,

~WRL temporary files are clipboard content created
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211632/en-us?FR=1

It's possible that your system variables (pointers)
for TMP= and TEMP= are pointing to a removable drive
(CD, thumb, diskette).

Click Start, right click on "My computer", choose properties.
In the 'Advanced tab' click 'Environment Variables'
and Edit those two pointers to be to a location that is
always available. The location needs to have read/write/delete
permissions.

Hi Bob,

First time user here so I may have made an error. I wrote that your
response was not helpful but am trying to rate you high because you not only
attempted to help but your instructions were clear.

In "Environment Variables" the Temp and TMP "User Variables" in the top box
both point to my C: drive and the path is correctly named.

There is another box below titled "System Variables" that also include TEMP
and TMP and also point to the C: drive with the correct path.

From reviewing Google Groups (the Microsoft site is of little help as they
apparently do not admit they have a problem), the error I am receiving with
the subsequent destruction of entire documents with the inability to
reinstate these documents is a serious problem. I've been a MS defender for
many years but this is really causing me to consider alternatives. This is a
known problem going back 18 months.

Does anyone have any ideas how to solve this? I don't want to consider
uninstall and reinstall Office 2003 Pro but may have to do so if there are no
alternatives.

Default ~WRL "file permission error" loses all of my word in Word

Hello anyone,

I've done the above, cleared all .temp and .tmp files, cleared the
clipboard, and just spent a lot of fruitless time uninstalling Office 2003
Pro and reinstalling the same with all of the endless updates that should
have been issued when the software was released. In any event, I still have
entire documents that just disappear after receiving the afore-mentioned
error message.

From a review of Google Groups, Microsoft has been aware of this problem for
18 months with no apparent solution. Does anyone out there have an idea?
Why would it suddenly mess up like this?

Hi Rkasal,

If you start Word in Office safe mode (hold control key while starting Word) do you get the same issue? It could be a 3rd party app
that is interfering with the clipboard (as those are clipboard related files).

I'm assuming you have current antivirus/malware tools in place as well.

Oh yes, this most definetely occurs in so-called "safe mode." Safe mode
seemed to work so, having a deadline, I started working on the document I
needed to complete. I frequently saved the document and just lost a 241 page
#&%&)%&)%)% document. It's is no where to be found. I searched in Windows
explorer, using the search function from the "start" button. Everything. It
is gone. FFFF!!!!

Default ~WRL "file permission error" loses all of my word in Word

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your patience. Yes, I have updated everything including after I
uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003 Pro. I use Defender and WOC.

I also went back to a restore point but my restore point of less than a week
ago had the same problem. The safe mode was brought up in another point in
Google Groups. I did previously try that to no effect.

I think you're on to something about the clipboard as that is what I was
honing in on but I don't understand enough about it. It almost seems like
the clipboard gets too full and creates this problem. When I go to save by
either ctrl/s or clicking on "file" and "save," I receive the "file
permission" error. The other thing I notice is sometimes but all of the
time, the Word document I am trying to save we be called "Backup of xxxxx"
and if it's saved a second time, "Backup of backup of xxxxx" This file name
is pre-filled in the "name of file" space above the "type of file space" in
the little window that opens when clicking "file" and "save."

Thanks for you assistance.

Google Desktop can save you to a large degree, although you will lose
your formatting. Install Google Desktop and index all your files.
KEEP YOUR INDEXING UP TO DATE! When Word disappears your documents, if
the standard methods don't find it in
Docs&Settgs/You/ApplicationData/Microsoft/Word, or in a .wbk or .tmp
search, then try Google Desktop. Open Google Desktop and search an
exact phrase from your dispappeared doc, in quotes (i.e., Search for
"this exact phrase"). Desktop will list out some Word document links,
but the documents will probably be blank if you open them. BUT, if you
open the Preview for the seemingly-blank documents, the Preview will
show you your text, without formatting. This Preview text can be
selected and copied, and you can paste that into a blank Word document,
and there is most, if not all of your text, although, unfortunately
probably lacking all of your formatting. If a true fix comes out,
please let me know.
