Default Columns are numbers how to change to alphabet default

Help!

My Excel sheet has Numbers running down the side and
numbers running on the top as well instead of the
alphabets. When I create a new spreadsheet this is also
the case. I guess it is a setting somewhere but I cant
find where. or is this a bug, I dont really want to
reinstall. Does anyone know the setting to change it back
to use alphabet reference for columns

Thanks
