Default Adding info to created template without altering

I followed the instructions on Word help on how to create a template from an
existing document. Unfortunately, when adding information to the template,
the original is altered. How can I get the template to "freeze?"

I'm not sure I understand your question.

1. Save as a Template.

2. Use a template by going to File New and creating a new document based
on the template.

3. If you want the new document to also be a template, save it as a
template.

4. Do not open templates to create new documents based on them. Use File
New.

I want a template which will allow blank space to be filled without moving the text in front of the blank space to move forward. It may be called a "placeholder"

Tables are often used for this purpose, with cell size fixed rather than
depending on text. Otherwise, look into what Word calls an "online form."
Check this in help. For more about online forms, follow the links at
http://addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm#Forms or
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customizat...nTheBlanks.htm especially Dian
Chapman's series of articles.
