I have created a questionnaire with text boxes and check
boxes so that people can fill out the questionnaire on
the computer and email it back to me. But when I open the
document it opens in design mode. The 'protect document'
option on the tools menu is not available (greyed out).
Is there anything I can do to make sure the recipients
open the document in normal view? Cheers.

Sounds like you built it using the controls on the Controls Toolbox instead
of the formfields on the Forms Toolbar. You might want to take a look at
(especially the tutorials linked here):

Thanks for that. I have changed it all to forms but it
still isnt allowing me to protect it though. Is there
any way of doing it with the control tools because I
prefer the look of them...?

Even though some of the controls "look better", they are designed for
programming Word, not creating simple forms. You will be much better served
changing your online form to strictly using formfields instead of the
controls. Sorry! This way you CAN protect the document "for forms", use a
password to prevent unprotecting, etc.

For further information, what you want is what Word calls an "online form."
Check this in help. For more about online forms, follow the links at
http://addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm#Forms or
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customizat...nTheBlanks.htm especially Dian
Chapman's series of articles.

Hope this helps,
