Deleting Styles
I haven't been able to find the answer to this. Is there somewhere a list of
the built-in styles that come with Word 2003? I I'm trying to clean up style proliferation in a company that has 10 Word users of different levels of sophistication - we share enough documents and work in a way that can cause major proliferation of styles. I'm trying to train people to use styles rather than direct formatting, and not to reformat a built-in style etc. but right now don't have a list to know what is "vanilla" - my own normal.dot having been modified. Choose Format - Styles and Formatting. At the bottom of the task pane, drop
down the list and choose Custom. In the Format Styles box, click Styles at the bottom. At the top of that box, set Category to User-Defined Styles. That's a list of all of the styles that are not built-in. Now, set Category to All Styles. Observe the Delete button as you scroll among the styles shown. For built-in styles, the Delete button is grayed and unavailable. For user-created styles, Delete is available. For another approach, click the Organizer button at the bottom of the Style dialog box. Click the Styles tab. Under In Normal.dot, the Delete button doesn't disappear for built-in styles. However, if you try to delete a style, it will say "The build-in style ____ cannot be deleted". So... there are a couple of approaches. -- Herb Tyson MS MVP Please respond in the newsgroups so everyone can follow along. http://www.herbtyson.com "Ria_Amp" wrote in message ... You *can* "delete" most built-in styles. If you set the view to Styles in
Use, you can delete all but Normal, Default Paragraph Font, and any headings that are displayed. The rest aren't really deleted; they are just reset to their default Normal.dot formatting. I don't know why Normal and headings can't be reset this way; it's really a nuisance, but of course renaming Normal.dot will reset them all. -- Suzanne S. Thank you. They sure don't make that easy to find. Note that in your
message you wrote "format styles" - it is actually Format Settings. Now I can get rid of styles that have proliferated. thanks "Herb Tyson [MVP]" wrote: Choose Format - Styles and Formatting. It is Format | Style in Windows versions. If you're using a Mac, you might
want to try the Mac-specific NGs starting from http://www.microsoft.com/mac/communi...pid=newsgroups -- Suzanne S. Uh... what's a "Mac"? Isn't that a British raincoat?
Sheesh, Suzanne, how the heck did you know that? I've never actually even touched a Mac, so I have no clue how the Mac version of Word differs from the *real* version. ;-) -- Herb Tyson MS MVP Please respond in the newsgroups so everyone can follow along. http://www.herbtyson.com "Suzanne S. Before Dayo Mitchell left for her cross-country trek, she posted this link
and asked our help in redirecting any Mac users who might stray into these NGs. -- Suzanne S.
