Default getting tab-delimited info into Outlook?

Hi,

I am new to Outlook. I want to start using it as my main contacts manager.

I have set up a webpage where many of my contacts and friends will enter
their contact info in a form which will be mailed to me. I will receive
one mail per contact and the form of the data will be roughly as follows
(excerpt):

fname: Pierre
lname: Dutronc
email1:
email2:

phone_home: 086530098
phone_cell: 0732 8477563
phone_cell_operator: vodaphone
phone_work:

My idea was to copy/paste the data from all the emails into a single Excel
spread-sheet, having first names on row 1 and Last names on row 2 etc etc,
and then save as tab-delimited and get them imported into Outlook pretty
smoothly, basically creating one contact out of every column.

But I do not succeed, and I don't know very much about Excel either, so I
don't know where the problem lies.

Does anyone have any ideas about how I could get data such as the above
into Outlook without having to type it?

Thanks a lot!

/Pierre

#1 - Hope that the info you showed in your message is not "real" data -
something that is never advisable to post online

#2 - To create a file that can be imported into Outlook you need to do the
following
a) Row1 - put your field names in columns
(i.e. col1 = fname, col2 = lname etc)
b) Row2 thru n - individual contact values

#3 - If you plan on importing from Excel - make sure you create a "named
range" that includes the header row and all data rows. If you are not
familair with Excel "named ranges" - alternative is to save the worksheet as
a CSV file (or Tab delimited but CSV recommended). Otherwise, information on
"Named Ranges" can be found in the Excel help file.

#4 - Import whatever file you chose in item#3 into Outlook

#5 - One of your fields "phone_cell_operator" is not a standard Outlook
field so if you want to import it using the standard Outlook import wizard -
you'll have to use some existing field for that purpose (i.e. User 1, User 2
etc) - and no you cannot rename the field name. You cannot use the Outlook
import wizard to import to any user-defined fields (either added to the
standard contact form or via a "custom form". For that, you'll need 3rd
party software (such as ContactGenie -
http://www.contactgenie.com/cg20features.htm which does have custom field
support should that be of interest)
