Default Distribution List

I have an employee who has a distribution list containing 144 addresses. She
is having issues with this list and we need to break it up into smaller
Distribution Lists. How can we do that?

Right-click the DL and drag it a little. Release the mouse button and
choose Copy. You'll now have two identically-named DLs. Open the copy,
give it a new name, delete some of the contacts, then save and close it.
Open the original DL and remove from it the names you did NOT remove from
the copy. Save and close it. You'll now have two lists that each contain a
complementary portion of the original.

Brian,
When I use the procedure you mentioned, I get the following message:
"There is not enough memory on the Microsoft Exchange Server to perform the
operation"

Is there a way around this?

Possibly. Create a new contacts folder (not one named "Contacts" - one with
some other name where you've configured it to hold contact items) and
right-click and drag the DL to that other folder. If that doesn't work,
save the existing DL as a "Text Only (.txt)" file. Edit it to suit your
purposes and you should be able to select the entire remainder and paste the
results into the Members field. If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas.

Thanks Brian. Just curious. Is there a limit on a distribution list within
Outlook or Exchange 2003? Is 144 contacts too much?

Limits on recipients in the outgoing message being sent (including DLs) are set at the Exchange Server level and have nothing to do with Outlook. Likewise, if using an ISP mail server rather than Exchange, the ISP sets the limits on the number of recipients you can send to simultaneously.

Distribution lists do have limits, but they're not according to how many
items are in the list. See this:
