Default how get telephone number entry to display with spaces or dashes

When I enter new telephone numbers within a record in Contacts, it displays
as one continuous ten-digit number. I want it to automatically display with
the area code separated by a space, dash, period or parentheses and the next
three numbers separated from the last four numbers with a dash or period.
How can I accoomplish this?

Have you set your Windows dialing properties yet?

No, I had not. Making this change corrected the problem. Thanks, Brian.
