Default Combo Box Problem

I am trying to use a combo box within a subform. In form view, I can see the
drop-down arrow and when I click on the arrow I can see the desired
selections. However, after I make a selection I am getting the following
error message:

You can't assign a value to this object.
*The object may be a control on a read-only form.
*The object may be on a form that is open in Design view.
*The value may be too large for this field.

Can anyone help me correct this problem so that I do not get the error
message?

Thanks so much!
