Unprotecting a Word 97 document in Word 2002

Does anyone know how to unprotect a Word 97 document in Word 2002? The
Unprotect Document is visible on my toolbar but it is grayed-out. It is not
an isolated issue, it is more than one Word 97 document and several of my
team members have the same problem. We recently converted from Word 97 to
Word 2002.

It's possible the documents are slightly damaged... How about using
Insert/File to bring such a document into a new document? Does that work?
