Default altering Excel spreadsheet modification date

Is there a smarter way to know if an excel spreadsheet has
been modified, the only way i know of is to check the File
Properties and see when the file was last modified, but I
just realized by changing the computer clock to whenever
you wish, the "date last modifed""date created", etc.
dates on the properties fields are all altered.

thanks in advance
