Language settings in QuickStyles
I'm working in the UK. I therefore use English U.K. for my language settings.
In previous versions of Word, I've done this by setting the Language to English U.K. in the normal style of the normal template. That still works in 2007 - until you use QuickStyle sets to change the appearance of a whole document. The built-in QuickStyle sets are all located in %PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Office\Office12\1033, and all have English U.S. for the language. As soon as you switch style-set, you get US English throughout. Whilst I could unzip each .dotx file in the QuickStyles folder, and manually change the style, that is time-consuming and feels unnecessary. Given my PC is running in a UK locale, why did the QuickStyles get installed in the /1033 folder, not the /2057 folder? How do I get Word to put some UK versions in the /2057 folder? Why is Word even looking at the QuickStyles in the /1033 folder, when my PC is in a different locale? - shouldn't it only offer me the /2057 settings? Is there some crucial point where I've unwittingly told office to treat me as if I were in the 1033 locale? If I knew, I could revert the setting... |

I did a little checking on this and found the 1033 folder isn't specific to
US English - it just denotes English in this case. I don't think you need to manually edit the files, either. What I've found using RTM (not the trial version and a clean install, btw) is the Quick Style sets do not set or change the language. If I change text to English UK and change a Quick Styles set then the text is still English UK. I've tried this with several languages and the results are the same. I don't know why you are getting different results. Did you previously have a beta installed? If that's the case then I'd exit Word and rename the Quick Styles folder and then start Word. The Windows Installer should automatically start and repair your Office installation and recreate the Quick Style templates in the Quick Styles folder. Let us know if that rectifies the problem. Actually, please disregard my previous instructions. A few others tested
this as well and encountered the same results as you. In light of that I do believe there is a bug in the Quick Styles and have passed the relevant info on to the correct individuals. Thanks!
