Default how-to diplay polyline length on drawing?

I want to measure the length of things like utility trenches and walks. I found that the Add On "Shape Area and Perimeter" box does show the length of a polyline instead of the perimeter of its overall shape. (A polyline is multiple lines joined end to end; some sw calls them multilines.) Now, how do I get the length to display on the drawing next to the polyline and automatically update - like the dimension line numbers do?
