Funny, when I exit Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or any other Office application,
there's no cancel either. In fact, I don't have a single application (and I
have hundreds) that has a cancel button when I exit it.

By example 40tude-dialog does it! ;-)

What would a "cancel" button do anyway? Cancel what?

Download [1]. The zip file contains a vb-script to start Outlook with
the difference to the normal starting of outlook, that a message box
appears when you close Outlook, in which you can select if you want to
close or not.

To adjust the script for english language, open the vbs file with
rightclick on it | edit

and replace

Prompt = "Möchten Sie Outlook beenden?"

by example with

Prompt = "Do you want to quit?"

Most applications prompt you to save any changed files before they exit --
those that don't ought to be avoided! If you have not changed anything, the
apps exit without further intervention. If you HAVE changed something, the
options available usually include saving the changes, not saving the changes,
or cancelling, i.e., staying in the application long enough to figure out
whether the changes ought to be saved or not.

In the case of Outlook, I have it configured to empty the Deleted Items
folder when I exit, but to prompt me first. If there are no deleted items,
Outlook exits automatically and that is fine. When there are deleted items,
however, the dialog that asks me if I want to empty the Deleted Items folder
has only two options -- Yes and No. Regardless of which one I choose,
Outlook then closes. It would be nice to have the Cancel option so that I
can make sure nothing was deleted inadvertently before I exit. As it is, my
best option is to say 'No' (do not empty Deleted Items), then restart Outlook
to check. I often don't want to take time to do that when I am leaving the
office, but if I wait until the next day, I may well forget to check the
Deleted Items when I open Outlook, leading to the same problem the next time
I exit.

This deficiency in Outlook is merely annoying, but it annoys me on a regular
basis. It seems to me that the fix is probably so trivial that I cannot
understand why it has not been done long ago. I must confess that Outlook
2003 is better than previous versions because logs from automatic
synchronization of my online/offline folders no longer end up in the Deleted
Items folder.
