Page layout will not change

When selecting File/page set up/ then either margins or page orientation, I
cannot change the document as I receive the message "Increasing left margin
causes first column to become too narrow in some sections having unevenly
spaced columns".

I am not using Columns within the document and not trying to change the left
margin!!

As you've discerned, this message is bogus. Unfortunately, I am not sure
what causes it. I have seen it in some instances when a section break was
not preceded by a paragraph break, but more recent versions of Word
automatically correct that. There are a number of problems that can arise
from using the Columns button on the toolbar, which does not result in the
"Equal column width" box being checked in the Columns dialog, but that
doesn't seem to be an issue here. I would treat the document as corrupt; see
